Year 5 Pinhole Camera project

Way back at the end of April, the Year 5 pupils took a train journey to Southease Youth Hostel to learn to make pinhole cameras as part of a joint project with ‘So Sussex’, ‘Classrooms Without Walls’ and the ‘Newhaven-Dieppe’ Art Festival. The artist Nick Sayers, who has been pioneering this technique for the last 6 years, taught us how to make the cameras. We then spent the afternoon putting the cameras up around the local countryside, town and school grounds.

Fast-forward to July; many cameras have become casualties of poor weather, light vandalism and cows (really!). However, over half of the cameras survived to produce some absolutely stunning long-exposure images of the local area. The best were enlarged, printed and put up on display at Bishopstone Station and the Youth Hostel at Southease. These photos show the artists next to their work!

Our topic this term is 'The Aztecs'. If you have any Mexico-related artefacts or photographs, please send them in! We will also be doing some cooking (everyone loves Mexican food!) so if you feel brave, come in and enjoy a morning or afternoon in the kitchen helping a group of Year 5 pupils rustle up a Mexican-inspired feast!
Our class assembly is on Thursday 19th October at 9.10am. We hope you are able to join us for a poetry-themed celebration of Year 5 work!
